Die Deutschen in Litauen

by Dr. Rudolf Heberle

1927

Die Deutschen in Litauen (The Germans in Lithuania) was written by Dr. Rudolf Heberle (1918-1991) and was published in 1927 by the Deutschen Ausland-Institut in Stuttgart. The work is thought to be one of the first books of its kind to be published on the German minority in Lithuania. Dr. Heberle takes a sociological view of the the Germans in Lithuania in the 1920’s, providing background on the history of Germans in Lithuania, how they came to the country, where they lived, and what their status in the population was. He provides interesting statistics on the population in addition to discussing their politics, religion, and culture.

According to IAGL founder and Geschäftsführer Owen M. McCafferty II “This [Die Deutschen in Litauen] publication is to me one of the most complete and seminal works on the Germans in Lithuania. It should be required reading for anyone wishing to learn more about their German roots in Lithuania…even those whose ancestors left before the book was published. It is one of the most important writings on our community.”
